Widnes Vikings coach Denis Betts says that Kevin Brown remains an “international class,” halfback as he helped drive the Vikings to the top of Super League on Sunday.
Brown was overlooked throughout most of Steve McNamara’s tenure as England coach, despite playing during his first year in charge in 2010.
However, with new coach Wayne Bennett in charge, Betts insists that the Vikings skipper remains as good as ever.
“It’s never been that much of an issue for me – he’s international class,” Betts said.
“He’s my captain, he’s my talisman and when you want something to happen you give the ball to him.
“There are some good foils around him, but Kevin is just class.
“It’s unfortunate he hasn’t had more caps, but there’s competition for places there. Gareth Widdop is a good player, Luke Gale is playing well and Matty Smith is obviously in possession of the shirt at the moment.”
Betts was also quick to praise another key member of his side after the win – hooker Lloyd White.
White was outstanding during the win at the John Smith’s Stadium, and Betts revealed that he rates him amongst the best in his position throughout the competition.
“I think he’s not far off being one of the best (hookers in Super League),” he said.
“He was actually disappointed when he came off, but I don’t think anyone passes the ball off the floor better than him.”
