Sydney Roosters and former Wigan winger Joe Burgess has said he’s hopeful he’ll get a better reception from St Helens fans on Friday night than the ones he’s got when he’s been in a Wigan shirt.
The Roosters winger will make his competitive debut for the club this weekend after joining from Super League heavyweights Wigan, where he had more than a bit of history with the Saints in the past.
Burgess recalled a derby from recent years where he antagonised the Saints fans by throwing the ball to them after he had scored at Langtree Park – and says that although he could get a better reception from the St Helens faithful, there’s a chance he may not too!
“I ran the length of the field, scored, and threw the ball into the crowd ,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald.
“By the end of the game, we were down, and I got quite a bit of stick. ‘Burgess, Burgess, what’s the score?’ I was getting it for all of the game. I threw the ball and the ref said ‘don’t get ’em started’.
“I might get a better reception this week because I’m in Roosters colours – but I might not!”
