We’re going to give the Cup a real crack, says Watson

Salford Red Devils coach Ian Watson has insisted to the club’s fans that they are going to give the Challenge Cup a “real good crack” in 2016.

Watson revealed to TotalRL.com that he is planning on sending a strong squad to Hunslet for this weekend’s fifth-round tie, with only a small number of players missing out due to minor injuries.

And Watson revealed he is determined to have a proper run in the competition this year – saying that the club have already spoken behind closed doors about what a cup run can do for a team.

“It’s great for a club, and it’s something we’ve spoken about as a club and a group, to have a good run in the cup,” he said.

“You want to do as well as you can in it because it’s a special competition. There’s millions watching around the world on final day and there’s over 80,000 in the stadium at Wembley.

“You dream of getting there so we’re going to give this a real good crack this year.”

Watson also revealed some of his early team news to TotalRL – with three key men set to miss out this week.

“Justin Carney has got a niggle with his calf for a while, so he’ll miss this week.

“George Griffin and Craig Kopczak will also sit it out; Craig played in the Leeds game but he’ll drop out this week to rest up.

“They’ll all be fine for Catalans as they’re little niggles more than anything else. George and Koppy have done massive amounts for us this year so we don’t want to overplay them, because they’ll burn out and break down.”
