Powell looking forward to Hampshire reunion

A number of Wigan youngsters will embrace the Super League scene again when the Warriors take on Castleford, but one will be on the opposing team.

Ryan Hampshire will don the colours of Castleford on Friday night as he goes up against his parent club, who sent him to Cas on a season-long loan at the start of the year.

The contest will give Hampshire the opportunity to play against a number of his friends, including Wigan’s young star Sam Powell.

23-year-old Powell has impressed in cherry and white this year and is currently third in the Super League tackling charts this season.

Powell and Hampshire’s friendship goes back years due to their time in Wigan’s youth setup, and Powell is now looking forward to playing against his old chum.

“He’s a good mate of mine,” said Powell. “So it will be good to go up against him and have a chat with him after the game because I’ve not spoken to him for a while. It will be good to go up against him.”

A section of Wigan’s support is still in a state of shock following their gruesome defeat at Wakefield last week. It has proved to be a difficult week for all that were involved in that mauling, but now Powell insists the team want to right a lot of wrongs.

“The beauty of Rugby League is that you’re only a week away from your next game,” he said.

“We’ve got to go back to basics; running hard and tackling tough. We’re coming up against a good Castleford side, so it will be a challenge for us. But we’re hurting after that defeat and we want to make amends, so we’re looking forward to it.

“We just want to put a good performance in and if we play well we give ourselves the best chance possible of winning the match as well.”
