Wakefield coach James Webster said he was disappointed but proud after his side were held to a draw against Hull FC thanks to a last-minute Kirk Yeaman try.
After wrestling the lead back three times, the Wildcats looked to have the game sewn up with just 90 seconds left on the clock. But Yeaman’s four-pointer, converted by Joe Westerman, tied the scores and Wakefield are now two points clear of 12th-place Salford Red Devils, and 11 clear of the relegation zone.
“We got a point against a really good team,” Webster said.
“If you match them up salary cap wise they’re well ahead of us so for us to guts it out the way we did, I’m proud of my team again. We made it difficult for ourselves at times.
“While I’m a bit deflated that we were winning with a minute and a half to go, our club has picked up another point and that’s vital for us.
“If you said today I could have had a point and not come, you might have thought about it because that’s how important it is for our club.
“The boys there wanted to win today to catch Hull FC. That was our main objective and it’s funny, we’ve got a group of boys there who are quite disappointed.
“Six weeks ago, the way we were travelling, we’d probably have been over the moon to get a point against Hull FC. Our mindset has changed, we want to progress as a club and while we let it slip at the end, they played some good footy so probably deserved something out of it.
“That mindset’s been in the club since day one when I took over and realistically it was the mindset all the time. I didn’t change that, I just spoke about it a little bit more. With a change it allows you to start a season again and emphasise a few more areas that we didn’t get a chance to before.
“We just want to fulfil our potential and every player wants to be the best they can. I think we can see from the last three weeks that we’ve got a team with plenty of spirit about them and they’re committed to the cause. We’ve beaten London on a really trick night, beat a great team in Wigan and Hull we’ve taken a point from in a really tough game.
“I’m a happy coach in that I’ve got a group of players that are committed and backing me totally.”
